The Next Big Consumer Brand
Launching a consumer brand used to require factories, buyers, heavy investment, and years of runway. Shopify made it possible for a new generation to sell direct to their customer online. Amazon FBA made fulfilment easy. The last decade of DTC streetwear proved you could build a multi-million dollar brand with a Shopify store, an Instagram account, and an engaged community.
The next wave of DTC consumer brands will probably have to be different and stretch further to really stand out. They will need to have optimised processes, sales and ops, and use data intelligently but they will also need a clear and consistent brand identity that stays recognisable even as their product changes. At MercuriDash, the company I founded, we help brands explore, refine, decide what to make and get it to market quickly — using generative AI, real-time data, integrated workflows and brand specific learning - rather than relying on gut feel and inefficient, scattered processes. However, we took care to ensure brand is a primary signal so that even when brands take into account other commercial and market signals, brand and creative does not get lost in the mix.
When everyone can prototype in a weekend, brands will need to think more deeply about how to combine speed, and commerciality with a clear creative identity. The thing that makes someone choose your t-shirt or bedding or candle-set over the ten alternatives in their feed.
A clear, consistent brand identity is actually harder than it seems - because brand can be hard to pin down and capture initially and even harder to keep aligned when multiple stakeholders get their hands in the development process. Avoiding brand drift is really important in an age of AI enablement. This is one of the things we help brands do on MercuriDash - to keep all these creative and commercial factors balanced and ensure that you develop product in a holistic way.
To sum up, we don't know what the next generation of big consumer brands will look like - and that is really exciting - but we do know they are likely to be pro-tech, AI-driven, creatively memorable and community aware.
