The Rise of the Product Designer Founder

    Mar 12, 2026•Design

Investors and the startup world have long recognised two archetypal founders: the nerd and the visionary. The technical genius who builds the thing, and the charismatic leader who sells the dream. These are the founders who get funded, celebrated, and written about.

But with the advent of AI, a third type of founder is becoming viable—and visible: the product designer.

This is not a new archetype. The product designer was always the engine of great startups. They were the ones who understood what to build, why it mattered, and how people would actually use it. They shaped the experience. They connected the technology to the human need. They were the reason products felt right.

But people never fully understood that this was the secret sauce.

Instead, the product person got absorbed into other narratives. They were lumped in with the nerd—"oh, you build things?"—or folded into the visionary—"so you are the ideas person?" Neither label fit. And the question they heard most often was: "So... what do you actually do?"

The truth is, every truly enduring company was built by someone who was, at heart, a product person. Steve Jobs. Jony Ive. The founders behind the products we remember were not just technologists or salespeople—they were obsessive about craft, experience, and design. They understood that the product is the strategy.

But for decades, these founders were ignored, sidelined, or misunderstood. In a world that worshipped code and capital, the person who cared most about what the user actually experienced was often the least valued in the room.

The age of AI changes this.

When AI can write the code, generate the content, and automate the operations, the differentiator is no longer technical execution. It is taste. It is judgment. It is the ability to see what should exist and shape it into something people love.

That is what product designers do.

AI does not replace the product designer—it amplifies them. It removes the bottleneck of technical implementation and lets the product thinker move at the speed of their ideas. For the first time, the person with the vision for the experience can build it themselves, without waiting for permission or engineering resources.

This is their time to step up and shine.

And I am here for it.
